Dear friend of the Cross-Cultural Center, The spring quarter is finally at its end, with finals in less than
one week! A complete year has gone by since we were both hired to work
for the CCC and we have grown in more ways than one. We have enjoyed
contributing to the work that our fellow interns have done throughout
the year and can honestly say that our lives are forever changed thanks
to the Cross-Cultural Center and the people who come around. As this
school year comes to an end, we would like to appreciate the hard work
that all the interns, PEACErs and directors have done on campus.
Without their work and productivity, UC Davis would not be the same.
This edition of TCB entails recaps of our previous events, a new
Culturally Inspired section and also that thanks and praise for the
family we have created at the Center. Have a great summer and remember
to stop by and visit. See you in the fall of 2009!
Enjoy!

Leadership Workshop 2 June 6, 2009 12:00 - 4:00 PM MU Garrison
Last
quarter, we had an organizing workshop---a special training designed to
support Middle Eastern/South Asian student leaders on this campus by
focusing on issues such as strategy planning, campaign organizing,
media, outreach, negotiations with administration, building alliances,
etc. The workshop was facilitated by two South Asian and Arab American
woman activists from the Bay Area. The workshop was a huge success and
we are now organizing a Part 2 of this workshop and opening it to all
communities focused on similar issues including coalition building.

Adapting to New Grounds May 21, 2009
At the night of the event, we showed Bajo La Misma Luna or Under The Same Moon, which is a movie concerning immigration and the different elements that are involved in immigrating to the United States from Mexico. We occasionally paused the movie to discuss these elements and compare them to the experience that international students have here at UC Davis. There was plenty of delicious catered food from local Davis restaurants that kept the atmosphere lively and kept tummies satisfied. I want to thank the Habesha Student Union, the Hawaii Club, and the Graduate Student Association for being present and supporting the event!

A Taste of MESA May 26, 2009
A Taste of MESA was the final end-of-the-year celebration of the achievements of the MESA community that allowed the campus community to get a taste of the diverse and vibrant community. With an excited crowd of over 100, we all tasted a flavor of the following beautiful performances: wonderful Arab guitarist, an Iranian "Bandari" dance, Indian classical singer, and an energetic South Indian performance. I would like to thank all of those who attended, and I hope to have another celebration with more MESA dance groups soon!

Our Story of Activism Class Presentation May 26 & 28, 2009
Over the course of two days, CCC interns recreated the OurStory of Acitvism presentations from our Winter OurStory program. With an audience of about 100 people a day for each of the two days of the presentations, we told stories of the activism that has occurred here at UC Davis in the African Diaspora, Middle Easter/South Asian, Asian Pacific Islander, Native American and Chican@/Latin@ communities. Many first year students, transfer students and others were introduced to the story of activism that is UC Davis and we're glad to have been able to bring it all together.

This year the 4th annual Queer People of Color conference was organized
by the Queer People of Color Collective at UC Davis. The theme of the
conference was, " Building Communities through Art Action and
Resi stance." With this conference, we- queer people of color and
allies- came together to tackle a keleidescope of issues such as
homophobia, racism, ableism, imperialism and our different forms of
resistance. These images are a beautiful result of a community art
project that came to fruition during the 4th annual Queer People of
Color Conference at UC Davis. |
