Dear friend of the Cross-Cultural Center,
On behalf of the staff of the Cross Cultural Center, I would like to
Welcome you to a new year of beginnings and first anniversary of TCB.
This year, as a result of the budget cuts our campus is facing and as
part of the re-organization efforts in the division of Student Affairs,
the Cross Cultural Center has taken on additional programming and
services to support the campus wide community. These include: the
annual cultural days programs with their long tradition of 40 year plus
history on our campus, the only UC Davis Mexican folklorico dance
troupe, Danzantes del Alma, and a couple of graduation programs that
serve our campus community. To provide support for these programs and
student leaders, we will be joined by a number of new faces in our
professional staff. It is my pleasure to introduce Dr. Paul Kim, who is
new to our campus and will be serving as a counselor located within the
cross cultural center. I am also pleased to welcome San Mei Li who
will serve our department as Office Coordinator. Joining our Danzantes
del Alma program, we are fortunate to have the services of Roxana
Borrego, an accomplished professional dancer and instructor in Mexican
folklorico. We are currently working on finalizing recruitment for
more new member of our staff and we look forward to introducing them to
you in the next edition of TCB. You are invited to visit our newly
designed website for up to date updates and current calendar that will
provide you with information on upcoming programs and services. I would
also like to let you know that we will be operating during this year of
transition with new operational hours. The center will be open to the
campus community starting at 10 a.m. and closing at 6 p.m. Monday to
Thursday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays.
There are indeed many and new exciting changes taking place in our
department and I invite you to stop by to find out how you can get
involved or take advantage of the programs and services we provide at
the Cross Cultural Center. I wish you a new academic year of success
and blessings as you move forward with Fall quarter. Please do let us
know if we can be of service to you in any way or if you have any
suggestions for us. As always, I invite you to be the change you want
to see at UC Davis!
In unity,
Steven Baissa Director UC Davis Cross-Cultural Center

Cross Cultural Center Open HouseSept. 25, 2009 The Cross Cultural Center Open House turned out to be a success! We had approximately 250 people attend our fall welcome event and we were able to provide them with lots of food. We gave tours of our center, took them through a maze of oppression, and the performance groups: Bakuhatsu Taiko Dan, the Nigerian Student Association, and Danzantes del Alma provided entertainment for all of the attendees.

Hoodlife Theme Park Sept. 25, 2009
Despite getting off to a rocky start, the CCC staffers and volunteers were able to construct a 35 foot maze of theater department donated flats, which were then spray painted with signs, symbols, and phrases of oppression. Our CCC family and friends then took up position inside the tunnel to provide passers-through an explanation of the project as well as to inform them on current campus issues regarding the different types of oppression. It was a huge success, as was the whole of the CCC Fall Welcome, with special guest appearance by Chancellor Linda Katehi.

Graduate Ally Training Sept. 26, 2009
The Cross Cultural Center, in conjunction with the WRRC, CVPP, GSA, BPGSA, GAAAP, the GASC, and others were able to come together to provide a much needed Ally training to our Graduate student community. Providing training to nominated students from each participating graduate cluster in areas such as Ally Development, Power and Privilege, and Campus Resources takes a new step forward in assuring that all of our marginalized communities, in all levels of our campus, have the information and access to the spaces and places that will ensure their physical and psychological safety and security.
