Black Family Week (BFW)
February 11-13, 2013
Black Family Week is a time to celebrate and bring awareness to the history and presence of the African Diaspora community at the UC Davis campus. These weeklong events consist of educational, social, cultural, and artistic programs enhancing the overall fellowship geared toward reviving the Black UC Davis community.
Black Family Week is a program of the Cross Cultural Center and funded by ASUCD, Office of Campus Community Relations, and the Building a More Inclusive Community Initiative. Special thanks to all collaborating organizations and departments, including African American and African Alumni Association, Cal Aggie Alumni Association, Internship & Career Center, Entertainment Council, Imani Clinic, Bohart Museum of Entomology and Lambda Sigma Gamma.
Special Thanks to the African American and African Studies Program, African Diaspora Cultivating Education, the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Resource Center, Black Student Union, Black Campus Ministries, Student Housing, and Phi Beta Signa Fraternity Inc.

Gospoel Extravaganza This church service, composed of praise dancing, singing, speaking, and worship, will portray different aspects of what taskes place in the "Black Church" |
Gender Deconstructed This workshop will explore how we define gender (woman, man, cis, trans, etc) in the Black community, and how this affects our relationships with each other and people outside our community.
Walkthrough: Revisiting Our Story An event put on by the residents of the African American Themed Floor that showcases iconic movements, individuals, and events that are pertinent to Black history. |

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. Presents: The Dating Game This event will give students a chance to reclaim their sexuality and love life while showing the campus that black love is real and possible.
Q&A session/Book Reading: Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson Bestselling author Isabel Wilkerson reads from her epic work The Warmth of Other Suns, a story about three people who made the decision of their lives in what came to be known as the Great Migration. Soul Speaks ACE presents, a night of multi-cultural expression, showcasing the many soulful talents of the beautiful identifying members and allies of the African-Diaspora at UC Davis. |
Black Research Symposium UC Davis Black researchers from various fields will share their research during an interactive symposium.
The Hiplife in Ghana: West African Indigenization of Hip-Hop Book Reading by UC Davis Professor Halifu Osumare The program shows how contemporary pop culture in West Africa is connected to U.S. hip-hop, and therefore our cultural connections across the Black Atlantic. |
African Diaspora Community Breakfast This program involves Community discussion regarding community building and fostering relationships over a simple meal. |
