Beyond Acoustics: Social Change Through Identity and PoetryOctober 30th 2007 | Griffin Lounge MU
Andrea Gibson will be opening. Andrea is currently ranked the #3 slam poet in the world and is an intense and fierce performer. She is a queer poet/activist whoÕs work deconstructs the foundations of the current political machine.

Chris Pureka has independently released three CDÕs, her most recent being Dryland in 2006. She writes from an internal place of intense vulnerability and specificity without ever excluding her audience. Instead, the personal nature of her music and the exactitude of her vision radiate providing multiple points of contact for her fansÕ feelings and experiences to intersect with hers.

Chris Pureka and Andrea Gibson are strong performers with the innate ability to appeal to and reach people of all different communities. Their work and charisma draw people in and hold them spellbound until their performances are complete. Both artists serve as role models not only to the LGBTIQQA community, but also to those who do not identify or feel that they have a place in mainstream culture. Chris Pureka & Andrea Gibson are powerful women who are redefining what it means to be a woman by standing strong in their beliefs and not letting let society influence, dictate, or alter their world views. They show the world that strong women can and do exist, and that they can be successful without conforming to societal norms. Pureka cultivates more of an androgynous appearance; as she blurs the gender binary she makes her personal political statement through her appearance and identifies as genderqueer. Andrea deconstructs gender norms on a different level by dealing with the issues explicitly in her poetry. The balance that these two can provide is important; while Gibson critiques society as a whole and brings attention to different, various forms of oppression, Pureka focuses on individuality with heartfelt messages of life, love, reparation, and happiness. Both of these artists provide inspiration and healing.

Please join us in celebrating our 15th Year Anniversary of the Cross-Cultural Center. This event is co-partnered by Campus Unions.
This event is co-sponsored by the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Resource Center, Women's Resource & Research Center, and Office of Campus Community Relations and is FREE to the public.
