The Students of Diverse Affiliations (S.o.D.A.) is the formal name of a new council created for student organizations who are affiliated with the UC Davis Cross-Cultural Center. During the winter and spring quarters of 2006, the CCC began this pilot program with 6 student organizations. These student organizations came together to develop a new model at UC Davis that intentionally delivers collaborative programming across cultures, and the spectrum of diversity. The council was designed to develop more collaborative and long lasting relationships with groups and organizations that share the mission and philosophy of the Cross-Cultural Center and foster a sense of community.

The Purpose of S.o.D.A.
While UC Davis by the numbers appears to be a very diverse campus community, in reality, what we have however is a campus that is divided across many lines for a variety of reasons. These reasons may include, a need for critical mass survival of a particular group, need for a support system from affinity groups, or a lack of intentional opportunities for cross-cultural opportunities. As an example, we can examine La Raza Cultural Days or Black Family Week and note that the community that primarily attends these events is those of that particular group.

Likewise, culture nights by Pilipino community or South Asian community are also predominantly attended by the specific communities they serve. These are very important events to our campus. Yet, we as a campus community do not yet have a sustainable intentional cross-cultural interaction that brings many of our diverse communities together through out the academic year. We believe we have many missed opportunities by a lack of intentional interactions across communities that will allow us to foster a more welcoming, inclusive campus community. This is why; we believe an idea such as the S.o.D.A. council will allow us to begin to explore this cross cultural experience with much more intention led by our own students.
