Danzantes del Alma, established in 1977 as Ballet Folklórico del Alma, is a student dance troupe housed under the Cross Cultural Center that celebrates Mexican culture through traditional and contemporary dance. As a holistic retention program, Danzantes del Alma de UC Davis provides space for members to create their own familia and build community with allies. We stand by the same principles of Cultural Competency, Identity Exploration, Leadership Development, and Advocacy that the CCC puts forth.
The first DdA Annual Show was held at Freeborn Hall in 1992, five years after our name change to Danzantes del Alma. The purpose of the show is to carry on our traditions established by students before us, make our presence on campus, promote higher education for our community, and to celebrate our cultural heritage in an institution of higher education. We use dance as a bridge between past and present, emphasizing the importance of a show that exhibits our ancestral history, reconnects with our roots, and educates our community. This year, our theme is “Bailando para crear unidad y solidaridad” / “dancing to create unity and solidarity.” Through our troupe collective, year-round efforts, we work to highlight the interconnectedness with other communities and students organizations. Together, we create history.
